Planning, Building and Development

The City's Planning and Building & Safety Divisions oversee entitlement approvals and issuances of all applicable building permits related to a construction project for a business or commercial development. In this section, you will find information regarding permitting requirements, application procedures, and project-specific regulations.

City Planning approval is required for all Cerritos businesses proposing to make any type of building modifications (such as tenant improvements or interior/exterior remodels), signage installations, and landscaping or parking and accessibility improvements. The Current Planning Division, specifically reviews Development proposals and business license applications to ensure that proposed uses comply with local zoning requirements and meet the City's standards for development, set forth in the Cerritos Municipal Code.

For building renovations and new construction, a building permit must be approved and issued by the Building and Safety Division. Permits may be obtained Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Building and Safety counter closes at 4:30 p.m. daily. If you are planning to construct a new building or expand an existing one, please contact the Department of Community Development at (562) 916-1201 to learn about required approvals and permits.
