Re-Roofing Guidelines

If you are looking to re-roof your home, you will need to get a permit from the Department of Community Development. Please contact the Department of Community Development at (562) 916-1201 to assist you in completing an application for review and approval by the appropriate City departments.

Homeowners, or an authorized representative of the homeowner, must submit a completed application to the City, including a sample of the proposed color and material to be used for re-roofing, if the color and/or material has not been previously approved by the City.

If a contractor is applying for the permit on behalf of the homeowner and will be responsible for re-roofing your home, the contractor must have both a State Contractors license and an active City business license. As part of the permit process, the City's Building and Safety Division will inspect the roofing once it has been replaced to determine if the proper roofing materials were used and correctly installed.

Under City ordinance, the following materials have been approved for replacement roofing: heavy-butted asphalt shingles (also known as "dimensional" fiberglass shingles), synthetic shake or synthetic tile, concrete tile, and clay tile or metal-coated material which simulates the appearance of clay or concrete. The installation of three-tab asphalt shingles is not permitted in Cerritos. All materials are required to have a minimum Class-C fire retardant rating and a minimum 30-year warranty.

Final Inspection Before Full Payment to Contractor

The City's final inspection of the roof should be done on your home before full payment is made to your contractor. The permit process reduces the chances of having an unlicensed contractor install substandard roofing materials.
